FAQ’s about this New Product
Why did JRS Country Acres roll out this new product (i.e. Cage Free eggs from hens fed GMO-Free grains?)
Over the years we have heard from customers that they are concerned about GMO grains (i.e that are fed to laying hens). Currently, a lot of research exists that offer differing opinions on the impacts of feeding animals GMO grains. Especially when those animals are then producing a product, such as laying hens (producing eggs), dairy cows (producing milk), bees (producing honey).
We are currently providing this new product in limited markets (i.e. at Albrecht’s Sentry in Delafield and at all the Outpost Natural Food Store’s in SE WI) in order to find out what our customers think. We understand that the federal gov’t passed a mandatory GMO labeling law in 2016 that will go into effect in July of 2018.

What does Hens Fed GMO-Free grains mean?
The majority of laying hens in the US are fed a diet rich in soybeans and corn that are raised from GMO (genetically modified organism) seeds. GMO’s can be found in plants, microorganism or other organism whose genetic makeup has been modified using recombinant DNA methods (also called gene splicing), gene modification or transgenic technology.
The hens that are supplying eggs for this new product have been fed a diet rich in GMO-Free grains (i.e. corn and soybeans). Our feed supplier has verified that the grains purchased to feed the hens are GMO-Free. Per the Non-GMO Project standards (the largest verifying body in North American) our hens have been fed GMO-Free grains for at least 30 days prior to the eggs being sold in the store.
Will JRS Country Acres new product line become Non-GMO Project Verified in the future?
Per the Non-GMO Project Standard* it is currently not a requirement for an animal ingredient product (i.e. eggs) to be verified as Non-GMO in order to be labeled as “hens fed GMO-Free grains.” With that said, we at JRS Country Acres believe in transparency and it is our future goal (once we know that our customers want this product) to get it certified through the Non-GMO Project.
*Background regarding the Non-GMO Project Standards for animal ingredients products, paragraph taken from the Non-GMO Project website
“Though traces of genetically modified material can be detected in animal ingredients 4, it is not the most reliable method for identifying or quantifying GMO content. Therefore, for ingredients such as meat, dairy, eggs, and honey, the standard focuses the evaluation on the animal feed. The feed does not need to be Non-GMO Project Verified, as long as it meets our requirements (though if it is verified, that certainly speeds up the verification process).”
